The pruning cut to remove branches that formed a collar should be made just to the outside of the collar. Sometimes that cut will form a wide angle with the trunk (shown at left), and sometimes it is made nearly parallel with the trunk (shown at right).

Photo at left shows two recently-executed removal cuts on the top and middle portion of the trunk section. The branch bark ridge and collars both remain in place following a removal cut. The pruning cut at the bottom is completely closed over forming symmetrical woundwood. This represents a pruning cut that meets current standards.
