This tree was planted with poor form and was never pruned to a dominant leader (left). Both main stems grew with an inclusion in the union over a period of ten years (right). The swollen wood below the union is the tree's response to both stems growing against one another. The trunk is cracked inside all along the length of the four or five-feet-long bulge.
